Young Driver AMR started with a solid performance at the FIA WEC season opener at Silverstone. The all-Danish trio of Nicki Thiim, Marco Sørensen and Christoffer Nygaard finished fourth in the team first race with the Aston Martin Racing entered Young Driver AMR-Aston Martin Vantage GTE in the GTE-Pro class. The Young Driver AMR-Aston Martin started from class pole position at Silverstone and was the best placed Aston Martin after six hours of racing.
Young Driver AMR had a strong start into the first six-hour race of the season, when Thiim went into the lead from Pole Position. Thiim maintained the top position during the first hour of the race. After two Full Course Yellows didn’t favour the strategy of Young Driver AMR and a slight delay in the pit stops, the Aston Martin dropped to fourth. The Young Driver-Trio consequently fought for a podium position and eventually finished fourth.
„We had the quickest car in our class and clocked the fastest race lap, but the Full Course Yellows weren’t in our favour of our strategy and that eventually cost some positions“, Jan Struve of Young Driver AMR said after the race. „We also lost some time during the pit stops and have now to analyse this in order to be better prepared for the next race at Spa in three weeks. The performance of our three drivers was impressive today. Marco drove his first race in a GT car today and he was not only very fast, but also very consistent.“
Driver quotes:
Nicki Thiim: „We had a good race, but also did some minor mistake. We couldn’t take advantage of the Full Course Yellow at the beginning and lost time during pit stops. In the Pro class every second counts, so we have to work even harder for the next race. The car has a very good pace and was very consistent.“
Marco Sørensen: „The car was a pleasure to drive. It would have been nice to finish on the podium, I think we deserved that, as Nicki, Christoffer and myself were quick enough to finish on the podium. We made some minor mistakes, which we have to fix for next race and then I’m sure that we have the car to be where we need to be.“
Christoffer Nygaard: „I had quite an intensive race. During my stint I had a Porsche in my mirror, which kept me very busy. In this class, every seconds counts and I couldn’t afford to let the Porsche pass me. I did my job this weekend, Nicki was in a league of his own and Marco had a very impressive debut in our team. I’m quite happy with this driver combination. A podium would have been possible today, but we couldn’t fight for the victory as the Ferrari were too quick.”
