The 3rd race of the VdeV Prototype championship took place on the 31st of May on the Paul Ricard Track. The Rinaldi-Biffis duo, at the wheel of the white and violet Tatuus Py012 of the Scuderia Bi&Bi scored a sensational win in the gentlemen class (8th overall). The top spot at the end of the race also placed the italian team on top of the season ranking of the Gentlemen class after strong finishes at Barcellona and Le Mans.
The race, which took place in challenging and changing weather conditions saw Vito Rinaldi and Marco Biffis in very strong shape, with a great comeback during the race after a difficult qualyfying session which saw them starting from 9th row on the grid.
The start was given under Safety Car after a strong rainfall took almost all of the teams by surprise, forcing them to start on rain tyres. The weather remained unsure for the first 40’, making a difficult task for Rinaldi to get the best out of the rain tyres.
At the end of the first hour the first of the many dramatic turn of events took place, the rain started to fall again on the track and forced the cars to follow the Safety Car after the first driver change. The next hours saw the team and the drivers playing a perfect strategy, with less time spent in the pits than the competitors and a great pace on track which allowed Vito Rinaldi to climb up to 11th position overall (2nd in class) at half way trough the 4th hour.
The last surprise came with a little more than an hour to go with the rain leaving the track, a last tyre change was necessary and with slick tyres fitted Marco Biffis took the track aiming to get the lead of the race.
The mission was accomplished with just a few laps from the checkered flag after an impressive set of laps in very tricky conditions.
On the finish line the italian prototype was first in the Gentlemen class and first of the Tatuus cars.
The fascinating prototypes of the VdeV will get back on track from 27th to 29th of June on the Dijon track where the team aims to increase the lead on the pack.
