AF Corse stroke back today in Race 2 at the Ricard, taking a beautiful win with Michele Rugolo and Pasin Lathouras. The Italian and the Thai put a perfect performance to beat the Teo Martín Motorsport McLaren 650 S of Alvaro Parente- Miguel Ramos, second like yesterday. The two line-ups are now tied up at the top of the championship standings, with 36 points. AF Corse put a second car on the podium as Ezequiel Pérez-Companc and Raffaele Giammaria took third, a nice reward after a bad start of the weekend. The GT Open will nos head to Portugal, for the second round of the season in two weeks, at Estoril, where more fight and novelties are expected.
THE RACE – Very close fight at the start with poleman Parente narrowly making it ahead of Kox, then Griffin, Rugolo, Costantini, Piccini, Companc and López. There is a contact between Benucci and Barba, while the Mercedes of Lechner is stopped in the pits with a technical problem, joining the other non-starters, the Parker Audi and the Maserati. In lap 2, López and Melnikov get in contact with the Argentine spinning and the Russian pitting. After its excellent start, the Corvette of Costantini has to concede its position to Piccini and Companc. In lap 4, Griffin passes Kox for second. The Dutchman is also attacked by Piccini. Both are passed by Rugolo soon after.
Parente gets to the pit stop with a 2” advantage over Griffin and Rugolo, and 6 on Kox and Piccini. After driver change, Lathouras leads over Cameron, starting a beautiful battle that sees the two exchanging the position. Eventually, the Thai takes the lead on lap 18, while four laps later also Ramos and Giammaria take over the Brit. The McLaren of Pronk makes a long stop for a technical problem. Broniszewski takes fourth from Cameron on lap 24, but loses it in the last lap because of a puncture. It’s Aicar taking 4th ahead of Cameron, Balzan, Sini and Nebylitskiy.
