It’s a sad day for Peugeot-Citroen CSA, since we’ve just learned of the death of Jean Boillot at the age of 84. The name Jean Boillot perhaps doesn’t mean much to younger readers, but without this man, Peugeot Sport certainly wouldn’t be where it is today.
Jean Boillot joined Automobiles Peugeot in 1954 and spent his entire career with the Sochaux firm. In 1974 he became the marque’s Commercial Director, was made a director in 1974, then Vice-President before becoming President of Automobiles Peugeot in 1984. He later became a member of the advisory board of PSA Peugeot-Citroen and was Vice President from 1999 to 2007.
Jean Boillot was behind some of the marque’s best results. He was effectively responsible for recruiting Jean Todt – and we’re all familiar with his subsequent career path. Jean Boillot recognised the interest which a sporting image would generate and teaming up with Jean Todt – a visionary like himself – would lead to two great successes: firstly the World Rally Championship with the 205 T16 in 1985 and 1986, then two victories at Le Mans for the Peugeot 905 in 1992 and 1993.
Endurance-Info sends its condolences to his family.
