Wolfgang Kaufmann had a very successful appearance in the 5th round of the Youngtimer Trophy in Zolder.
The Castrol Escort which Kaufmann usually drives had not yet recovered from the technical issues it had been suffering at the last race, so Kaufmann shared the team’s other Kremer Racing Ford Escort BDA with Dieter Dörmann. In extremely hot weather, with an ambient temperature at above 40 degrees, Kaufmann managed to put the Escort on P1 in both qualifying sessions on the famed Belgian track, and secure pole position.
Co-driver Dieter Dörmann took the start in the 41 car field. As he handed the car over to Kaufmann at the mandatory pit stop, unexpected smoke from the car and the subsequent tracing of the malfunction lost the team precious seconds. The chase was on, with Kaufmann turning the fastest race lap and finally passing the leading Ford escort of Dieter Karl Anton – himself a multiple former European Champion of historic touring cars – under braking for the chicane on the penultimate lap.
“We have put on a great recovery drive after our trouble during the pit stop, the Escort ran like clockwork. Taking the lead with that manoeuvre shortly before the end of the race was the well-deserved reward for Dieter Dörmann and the hard-charging team of Porsche Kremer Racing”, said Kaufmann after taking the overall and class win.
