Strakka Racing driver Nick Leventis will abseil down The Shard in London, Europe’s tallest skyscraper, in an attempt to raise £25,000 for two charities – the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund, which benefits serving and retired troops and The Outward Bound Trust educational charity.
Nick, who drives a Strakka Racing Honda Performance Development ARX-03a in the FIA World Endurance Championship, is among just 40 people who will attempt the daredevil feat on September 3, joining the likes of Prince Andrew and Ffion Hague, the wife of Foreign Secretary William Hague, in the charity decent.
The 310 metre (1,017ft) tall tower, located near London Bridge on the south bank of the River Thames, cost £450 million to build and opens to the public in early 2013.
Before he abseils from the pinnacle of The Shard, Nick will complete a day’s training with the Royal Marines Commandos on August 16. In addition to being a Le Mans 24 Hour race winning driver (winning the LMP2 category and finishing 5th overall in 2010), Nick holds the record for the highest altitude tandem-skydive, having jumped out of an aircraft 9,144 metres (30,000ft) above Mount Everest to raise money for the Global Angels Foundation, an international charity supporting Asia’s most disadvantaged children.
The super-fit sportsman has also run the New York City marathon, is an accomplished surfer and was a successful downhill ski racer before a back injury turned his sporting career in the direction of motorsport.
