The high point of Extreme Speed Motorsports’ (ESM) race day at Lime Rock Park was that both Tequila Patrón Ferraris charged through the pack to lead the race. The low point of the race day was that both Tequila Patrón Ferraris were hit and damaged by two different overly aggressive rivals.
Before two independent incidences with Prototype Challenge (PC) cars, the ESM Patrón Ferraris were on track for a pair of podium finishes. When the checkered flag flew, the No. 01 machine was listed in the fourth position, while the No. 02 machine ranked 11th in GT class.
The opening stints of the race were promising for both Patrón Ferraris. Ed Brown qualified the No. 02 car in the 11th position and Guy Cosmo took the first driving shift. Cosmo bid his time and worked his way through the field. On the 23rd lap of the race, approximately 25 minutes into the two hour and 45 minute event, Cosmo took over the race lead. He lead for approximately 38 laps before turning the No. 02 over to Brown for his first stint.
Brown had a successful stint and maintained a top-five running position in the GT class. Through careful race strategy and a perfectly-timed caution flag, Brown completed his stint and Cosmo was back on-track to finish the race on the podium. With less than eight minutes to go in the race, Cosmo was working his way through the field and in front of a PC-class race car. While approaching The Downhill section of the track, Cosmo signaled to the faster PC driver to delay his pass, however the prototype made contact with the Ferrari, sending it flying off of Turn Seven and into tire barrier.
Cosmo emerged from the Ferrari uninjured, but the green and black race machine was brought back to the ESM pits on a flatbed truck, severely damaged and ranked 11th in class.
Johannes van Overbeek led off in the No. 01 Tequila Patrón Ferrari. After Scott Sharp qualified the No. 01 in the seventh position, van Overbeek also worked his way through the field. During his stint, van Overbeek led laps before turning the driving duties over to Sharp, who also led several laps.
Sharp had a solid stint, and with less than an hour to go in the race, was tagged by a different PC car, spun and forced off track. He pitted and the team determined there was no body damage, however Sharp was experiencing a vibration in the car, but was still able to finish the race. At the end of the event, the No. 01 Tequila Patrón Ferrari was listed in fourth place in class.
Next up for the Extreme Speed Motorsports team is the Mobil 1 presents the Grand Prix of Mosport at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park on July 20-22.
