BMW Team SRM has successfully completed another trouble-free race with the brand new BMW M6 GT3 at the Clipsal 500.
Two lengthy Safety Car periods made it difficult for drivers Steve Richards and Max Twigg to make much headway in terms of track position, the BMW M6 GT3 ultimately classified 21st at the finish.
However, with the focus firmly on learning and development with the brand new car this weekend, both Twigg and Richards were happy to come out of the 38-minute race with more knowledge and more data.
“I feel that the car has improved a lot since yesterday,” explained Twigg, who started today’s race.
“What we have now is some data to overlay, so we can look at how we’re driving the car and how to use braking technique to set the car up better for the corner.
“It’s a shame we had that long Safety Car period at the start, it meant I really only got one clear lap. But the car definitely improved, it’s a better car each time.
“We’re going forward.”
Richards added that the race gave the team an improved understanding of what works best with the BMW M6 GT3.
“We changed the car again, and times are reasonably competitive,” he said.
“I made a couple of mistakes towards the end; one of the changes we made didn’t quite gel with the ABS. The good thing is we can make it better by going back on that change.
“Everything we do, right or wrong, we’re learning from it. That’s exactly what we should be doing at the moment. We have to work on things, try things, and see which direction it takes us in.
“We’re still working to understand how the changes we make affect the car. You need to know what works and what doesn’t work, and that’s what we’re learning right now.”
The final Australian GT Championship race of the Clipsal 500 race is tomorrow at 9:00am local time.
