The IMSA community is mourning the loss of David Stone, the guiding force behind multiple IMSA championship-winning efforts for Level 5 Motorsports and president and co-owner of top IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama team Kelly Moss Motorsports. Stone passed away Wednesday, Aug. 12 in Madison, Wisconsin, surrounded by his family.

Under Stone’s direction, Level 5 Motorsports won the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón Prototype Challenge (PC) championship in 2010. The team moved to the ALMS P2 category in 2011 and went on to win the class championship three consecutive times (2011-13). During that period, the team also won its class four consecutive years in the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Fueled by Fresh From Florida and the Petit Le Mans powered by Mazda.

At the start of the 2014 TUDOR United SportsCar Championship season, Level 5 Motorsports won the GT Daytona class in the Rolex 24 At Daytona. Kelly Moss Motorsports won the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama Platinum Cup Team and Driver Championships in 2014 and leads the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama Platinum Cup Driver points this season with driver Jesse Lazare, who swept both rounds in the team’s home race last weekend at Road America at an event that saw eight Kelly Moss podium finishes, a performance dedicated to Stone.

“Along with many others in the IMSA community, I am deeply saddened by the loss of David Stone,” IMSA President Scott Atherton said. “His teams’ on-track performance speaks for itself and is reflective of the type of person he was. Always prepared, always on top of their game. Our thoughts and prayers go out to David’s family and friends. He will be missed.”
