Kremer Racing’s new entry for the 2016 VLN endurance championship will be a breath of fresh air on the Nordschleife. With on mechanical underpinnings of the tried and proven Porsche 997 Cup, the team has created a modern interpretation of the legendary Kremer Porsche K3, one of the most successful Group 5 racecars of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Its overall victory at Le Mans in 1979 and the title in the Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft (DRM), Germany’s top level championship of the era, have made the 935 K3 immortal.
Just the right machine for Wolfgang Kaufmann to wreak havoc among the GT3 entries: „This car brings back some of the spirit of the old VLN“, Kaufmann describes his affection for the 935 K3 997. „instead of an off-the-shelf racecar, this is a bespoke, self-developed vehicle with its own distinct character.“
For this homage to Group 5, Kremer Racing collaborated with Holger Zimmermann’s firm Zimspeed.
For the team, this new Porsche 935 K3 997 will also mean a departure from the SP-Pro class it has been competing in for some time, and a switch over to Group H.
„I have been fortunate enough to get to drive the original Jägermeister Kremer Porsche 935 K3, and I have won the Oldtimer Grand Prix on the Nürburgring with that car“, Kaufmann recalls his encounter with the powerful turbo Porsche, „so to be able to run the 2016 Nordschleife season with this car, with its old-school looks and state-of-the-art technology, is a big deal for me. With its distinctive design, the car stands out among the GT3 and Cup cars. I hope the fans around the track will agree the Kremer 935 K3 997 is something special.“
In extremely bad weather, the car made its firs roll-out at the Hockenheimring. More testing at that track will follow before the car will finally hit the Nürburgring for the first time in mid-March. „Now we are working on compliance and on the setup, and then we will hopefully be able to put on a good show in the 2016 VLN championship“, Kaufmann says.
With such a car at his disposal, can it get any better? „Well, this car with a big turbo engine, that would do the trick“, Kaufmann smiles. Dreams are free…!
