Christian Hohenadel wrote a small piece of German Motorsport history in the most recent round of the VLN-Championship at the infamous Nürburgring-Nordschleife. In the six-hour race, the highlight of the VLN-season, he took his very first overall victory in an Audi TT-RS run by Raeder Motorsport alongside Le Mans-hero Frank Biela and former Red Bull Racing test driver Michael Ammermüller.
It was the first time in more then 30 years, that a front wheel driven car won a round of the VLN Championship. The 380 HP strong tiny and turbocharged Audi was the perfect weapon during a race with typical changeable weather conditions at the “Ring” and bet much more powerful cars like Porsche 911 GT3 R and Mercedes SLS AMG. Hohenadel not only won the race, he also took pole position for the race. In as many as 35 years, this was the first ever Pole Position for a front wheel driven car and Hohenadels second in VLN.
“We made the most out of the very difficult weather conditions”, Hohenadel explained. “It varied from wet to damp conditions and our Audi TT RS was always quick, whatever the weather was.”
For Hohenadel, there was no time to party or to rest after his victory on Saturday. On Sunday, he travelled to Paris to catch a flight to China together with his team Hexis AMR. In China, the third last and penultimate round of this year’s FIA GT1- World Championship will take place in Ordos in Inner Mongolia and in Beijing. Hohenadel is currently third in the drivers ranking with three races to go.
“I had already walked around the track in Ordos twice, but it’s still difficult to judge”, Hohenadel said after his arrival in China. “There are some tight and twisty corners followed by a really long straight. I’m quite anxious how we will perform here.” Hohenadel will drive on the track in his Hexis AMR-Aston Martin DBR9 for the first time in Friday’s free practise session.
