Claudio Sdanewitsch, the AF Corse driver that was injured in a crash during free practice at Spa, is recovering and aiming at returning to the GT Open before season ends. The 51-year old German-born is back to Zurich, where he lives and where he successfully underwent an operation to fix a little bone in his broken right knee. Showing wit and high spirits, Claudio said: “The doctors say that in 4 to 6 months I’ll be playing football, but frankly speaking, it is not football that I am interested in! I know this kind of injuries have long recovery times, but I am determined to do whatever I can to speed up rehabilitation and I have set to myself the objective to be back for the Monza and Barcelona rounds.”

Regarding the accident, occurred at the bus stop chicane, he explained: “It was really a stupid accident. I was on a quick lap following two cars that were running slower as they were about to pit. The second one changed line a couple of times while I was breaking and we had a very slight contact, but it was enough to send me off-track into the synthetic grass and from then on, I was just a passenger. There was a big shunt against Mediani, who could do nothing because he couldn’t see me coming from a side, and I had some really painful moments”.

GT Open race-winner Maurizio Mediani, who was returning to the series with the Russian Bears squad, was also slightly injured, as he broke a rib, but was already working with the team in the pits on Saturday.

All of us wish a swift and full recovery to Claudio and Maurizio.
