Andy Lally qualified seventh in the Dempsey Del Piero Racing No. 27 Tully’s Coffee Porsche 911 GT3 Cup Saturday, sharing the GTC class entry with Patrick Dempsey in tomorrow’s Orion Energy Systems 245 at Road America.

Lally found a full six tenths from where the No. 27 car was during Friday practice, but it was a challenging qualifying session as the gains were not enough to rank higher in the competitive GTC class field. He improved from a 2:13.629 in practice, to a qualifying time of 2:13.047.

“We took a look at putting some rear wing in it, because we were loose in a couple places,” Lally said. “I was a little worried because it was actually a ‘good loose,’ but we were thinking more about longevity with the tire, but didn’t work for qualifying. We pushed like crazy but didn’t quite make it.”

Dempsey will start the car for the race, as the Dempsey Del Piero team seeks its second podium finish of 2013 and a repeat of a class podium set in 2012.

“It’s an incredibly competitive series and Spencer (Pumpelly, polesitter) did a really great job in qualifying,” Dempsey said. “As you can tell it’s very strong, as are all the teams. That’s what makes the racing really exciting, because when you do well, you’ve done really well to overcome all the competition. The qualifying was unfortunate because we were very good in all the practices, but we had a little bit of understeer to fight. We’ll see where we’re at later in the weekend. I hope we have a solid race and great result.”
