On the heels of the most significant announcement in the history of sports car racing in North America, GRAND-AM Road Racing has announced that its existing Rolex Sports Car Series classes will operate virtually unchanged for the 2013 season. This decision is aimed at minimizing costs for teams as both GRAND-AM and the American Le Mans Series prepare for a unified season in 2014.

While the Daytona Prototype (DP) and Grand Touring (GT) classes will operate with no significant changes, there will be an addition to the Rolex Series lineup in 2013. The newly formed “GX” class – with cars and technologies not currently in the Rolex Series – is proceeding “on schedule” and will make its debut in the season-opening Rolex 24 At Daytona.

Announced this past May, the production-based GX class opens the door for alternative technologies and fuels to be used in Rolex Series competition.

The DP and GT classes – along with the GX class – will continue to provide the same door-to-door excitement sports car fans have come to expect from GRAND-AM. At the same time the ALMS will remain consistent with its class structure. Beginning in 2014, GRAND-AM and the ALMS will join forces to create North America’s premier sports car racing organization.

In addition, the two classes of competition in GRAND-AM’s Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge – Grand Sport and Street Tuner – also will be virtually unchanged in 2013.
