Newly crowned Avon Tyres British GT3 Champion Jonny Adam remains in pole position to clinch this year’s Sunoco Whelen Challenge title.
The Beechdean AMR ace holds a near-18-point advantage over Terrence Woodward, one of only two drivers who can now mathematically beat Adam to January’s Daytona 24 Hours prize outing.
The Radical European Masters driver has two rounds with which to overhaul the Scot, although the Challenge’s unique average score format means that only an almost perfect points total from across those races will suffice.
Victor Correa is the only other driver able to unseat Adam, although his chances are even slimmer than Woodward’s.
Victory and pole position at British GT’s Donington Park season finale would have seen Adam win the Challenge. In the end fifth on the road for he and co-driver Andrew Howard was enough to secure their first priority, the 2015 GT3 crown, as well as a sizeable chuck of points towards the Daytona drive.
Alexander Sims had been the only other British GT driver capable of winning this year’s Sunoco Whelen Challenge at Donington. But, despite setting the fastest qualifying time, retirement from Sunday’s race ultimately denied him an opportunity to improve on fourth in the current standings.
Adam meanwhile has a chance to follow in the footsteps of British GT rival Phil Keen whose Radical SR3 Challenge exploits throughout 2014 earned him the honour of racing the Whelen-sponsored Action Express Corvette DP at Daytona earlier this year.
For what it’s worth, Keen’s winning points total of 89.61 is 2.67 less than Adam’s current benchmark, suggesting the AMR factory driver has a fantastic chance of making his second appearance at Daytona early next year.
