The trio of Matt Howson, Richard Bradley and Nick Tandy dominated the 6 Hours of Nürburgring, the fourth round of eight in the FIA World Endurance Championship. Apart from losing the race lead after the second pit-stop and regaining with a classic overtaking manoeuvre soon after, the team didn’t put a foot wrong throughout their 185 laps of the Eifel mountains track in the Oreca 05 Nissan.
G-Drive Racing’s #26 and #28 Ligiers shared the battle for second place, with the Roman Rusinov, Julian Canal and Sam Bird car taking the runner-up slot with the sister car following in third.
The race was the first in the season where the majority of LMP2 teams adopted the same race strategy. The July Nürburgring test was in cooler conditions where most teams used the softer option available. With track temperatures exceeding 35 degrees centigrade on race day the medium tyre was the prime option and the teams mostly opted for three-double and one single stint, in line with driver changes.
While the LMP2 class is open to competition, all teams have now chosen to compete on Dunlop tyres. KCMG currently leads the FIA WEC Endurance Trophy standings for LMP2 teams with the #28 and #26 G-Drive Racing squads following at the mid-point in the season.
The next round takes place in the USA at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas on 19th September.
Vincent van Goor, Senior Engineer, Dunlop : “KCMG drove a near-perfect race. With only one viable strategy it was really important to work together to get the absolute best out of the tyres and the KCMG pace was indisputable. G-Drive did a great job pushing hard too and they still have four events left to regain their pre-Le Mans Championship lead.”
