Despite it being only the halfway point of the motorsport season Aston Martin Racing factory driver Jonny Adam will tackle his fourth 24-hour event of the year this weekend (July 25/26) at Belgium’s legendary Spa-Francorchamps circuit.

The Aston ace heads for the Ardennes circuit fresh from a dominant performance at the same venue, where he and Beechdean AMR team-mate Andrew Howard claimed pole position and victory in the recent two-hour British GT Championship event.

Now he will join Oman Racing Team’s #44 Aston Martin V12 Vantage GT3 crew of Ahmad Al Harthy, Daniel Lloyd and Jonathan Venter as they seek to challenge for honours in the Pro-Am class at one of the most prestigious races of the season – the Total 24 hours of Spa.

You have reached the halfway point of the 2015 season, how would you rate it so far from a personal point of view?

I feel I’m driving well this year and that’s got a lot to do with the fact that I’ve had so much seat time in both British GT and Blancpain Endurance Series. It’s been very enjoyable working with different Aston Martin GT3 customers as each event and race presents a different challenge, and for me I need to make sure that at every race weekend I help towards achieving the best possible result on and off the track.

What has been your biggest challenge?

The Nurburgring 24 Hour. It’s a massive event and the level of competition in GT3 is world class. It was a tough race with a lot of cars on the grid, big differences in speeds between classes and the weather was very changeable. I raced alongside fellow AMR factory drivers Mathias Lauda and Richie Stanaway in the #006 Aston Martin Vantage GT3. We looked good for at least a top six finish until we encountered a transmission problem, but on the whole it was a great experience and we’ll be back for another crack at it next year.

Which event have you enjoyed the most this year?

The Blancpain Endurance Series 1000km race at Paul Ricard was a great weekend. I did the last two hours of the race which went from dusk into darkness, that was pretty spectacular from a driver’s perspective. It was helped by Oman Racing / Motorbase achieving their best finish in the Pro class with a 10th place, so it was nice to be able to contribute to a successful team effort.

What are you looking forward to the most in the second half of the season?

There’s so much to choose from! Definitely this weekend’s Spa 24 Hour with Oman Racing Team as it is probably the hardest GT3 race in the world and we are looking to finish and fight for Pro AM honours. However, having scored a great result with Andrew Howard and Beechdean AMR in British GT at the last round that has put us second in the championship we now have good momentum and a fast Aston Martin GT3 so confidence is high we can challenge for the title. Hopefully there’s plenty more highlights to come.

Of all the places you’ve visited this season at home and abroad, which has been your favourite place away from the track and why?

Dubai 24 Hour. January is usually a quiet month for a racing driver so it’s great to get back behind the wheel early in the season. Plus the weather is nice to race in at that time of year and there is also a lot to do away from the track there so it’s a great place to go and compete.

You’ve got a packed schedule, but outside of racing circuits and racing cars have you driven anything or anywhere interesting on the road this year?

I was lucky to land the job of demonstration runs up the hill at Goodwood Festival of Speed 2015 Le Mans 24-hour Vantage GTE #97 Art Car. Ok it’s not a road car but it was a special piece of road and I got to make a lot of tyre smoke on the start line! It was a brilliant event, my first time there, the crowds were massive and it was great to see a range of classic Le Mans cars up close.

Apart from your racing kit what is the most essential part of your luggage when travelling to and from race weekends?

My Tom Tom! I have to confess I am not the best when it comes to directions so packing this is a must for me. I’d never make a rally driver.

Racing drivers always have nice watches, what’s on your wrist at the moment?

A Jaeger-LeCoultre I got from Aston Martin Racing when I became a factory driver. It’s a really beautiful watch and I wear it in and out of the car now.

Did you apply for the Top Gear job vacated by Jeremy Clarkson?

Yes, but they watched my on-board from BTCC at Knockhill in 2009 and said if I couldn’t be trusted with a fire extinguisher then it was a no-go!
