Morten Dons, alongside his teammate Rob Garofall, has won last weekend the 4 Hours of Imola in the LMP3 class, behind the wheel of the Ginetta-Juno LMP3 of University of Bolton.
The Danish driver has kindly answered a few questions for Endurance-Info :
What are your feelings about this win? Did the result exceed your expectations?
It is with do doubt the greatest victory I have had so far. I am really happy about the whole weekend, how everything worked out from the first day to the podium. I have never been to Imola before or even sat in prototype before and my pre season hasn’t been that great so to finally get in the car and then win was just amazing!
I hoped before the weekend that we could finish with a podium, so to get away with a well deserved win was fantastic!
What do you think about the Ginetta-Juno LMP3?
I really like the car and everything about it. The design, the handling and of cause the sound of it! I think the reliability so far has proven to be quite good.
Has the trafic been a problem at Imola with the LMP2s and the GTs? Where are the LMP3 quicker than the GTs, and where are the GTs quicker?
I don’t think the traffic was a problem, For sure the LMP2′s are very quick and you need to be very observing in your mirrors. Compared to the GTs I think the LMP3 is actually quite similar. A bit more downforce and mid corner speed in the LMP3, but the very high fixed gear ratio and the quite hard compound tire slow down the LMP3 a bit.
Can you say some words about the University of Bolton team? Are there many experienced members in the team?
The team did an absolutely perfect job. They worked almost every hour available on the car, to make sure it was prepared as good as possible, which for sure helped us to the victory! The cooporation with RLR Motorsport give the team some very experienced members in the leading positions, that the students from the University can learn from.
Have you been able to do some testing with the LMP3 before Imola?
Before Imola I had never sat in the car before or any other prototypes before. Actually I hadn’t raced since mid September 2014 for the final race in the GT4 British GT.
Can you say too some words about your teammate Rob Garofall?
Rob is a very good and experienced driver. He is a very nice and calm person that I got on with very fast and very well. We where quite minded on the same things such as strategy and driving style, and even thought we had never meet or worked with each other before I think our partnership worked extremely well and I enjoyed a lot.
Do you hope to race some day at Le Mans? What does the French event represent for you?
Yes! Le Mans for me is the goal alongside with a professional career as a racing driver. My plan is to be on the starting grid for Le Mans no later than 2017. This is what I’ve worked for since the autumn 2012 and I’m getting closer each year with more experience and more victories.
