After winning the 2014 Australian GT Championship presented by Pirelli in November, Erebus Motorsport is confident heading into the opening round of the 2015 season in Adelaide with an all-new driver line-up.
Morgan Haber will be the sole pilot of the white #28 SLS AMG GT3, with teammates Geoff Emery and Max Twigg co-driving the black #36 SLS AMG GT3.
Erebus Motorsport swept the round with a pole position and two race wins the last time the Adelaide Street Circuit formed part of the Australian GT Championship calendar in 2013, and the team is looking to repeat that performance.
Haber, who also joined the Erebus Academy recently alongside V8 Ute Racing Series driver Adam Marjoram, and motor bike rider Brandon Demmery, will be seeded as an ‘Expert’ for his inaugural season of GT racing.
“I’ve raced at Clipsal twice in the Development Series so I’ve got a good grasp on the track, but driving the SLS will be completely different to driving a V8 Supercar around there,” admitted Haber.
“Turn eight can be tricky – if you push a little bit too hard, it can really bite back, and I’ll have to adjust to not using the kerbs as much in the SLS.
“The turns four-five-six staircase is a tricky section to get right too, and that’s an area where you can lose a lot of time.
“I’ve raced at all of the tracks that the Championship will go to this year so it helps that I won’t have to learn any new tracks and I can just concentrate on getting my head around the car.”
The veteran pairing of Twigg and Emery, who will both be seeded as ‘Masters’ for the 2015 season, will be looking to build off their varied racing experience.
“I’ve run well at Clipsal in the past so it’s a place I like to go to,” said Emery.
“The walls can be daunting but it’s a fun track and very rewarding when you get it right.
“The high speed turn eight section is pretty challenging, and we’ll probably be doing up around 260 or 270 km/hr through there in the SLS.
“Overall the GT category is looking very strong this year and there are some very experienced drivers so it’s going to be a tough season.
“But Max and I are aiming to do a solid job and with us both being ‘Masters’ we’re hoping to use that to our advantage with shorter compulsory pit stop times.”
Having tasted success in previous years with podium finishes at the Adelaide Street Circuit driving a Porsche GT3 997 Cup car in the Australian GT Championship in 2009 and 2010, Twigg is confident that the car will suit the track well.
“Adelaide is a track that I’ve raced on many times, and I feel confident heading there,” said Twigg.
“The most challenging section will most likely be the turns one-two-three chicane where the kerbs might unsettle the aero of the GT cars.
“But I really like the back section from turn nine back around to the finish line, and I’m confident that the track will suit the aero of the SLS.
“After testing the SLS’s on Friday, having looked at a significant amount of footage, and having gone through data, we’re in a confident position heading into this weekend.
“Geoff and I get along with the whole Erebus team incredibly well and we’ve been really happy with our test days in the car, so we’re looking forward to a really strong race weekend.”
The four-day race weekend will include two 30-minute races and one 60-minute race.
The two 30-minute races will not include driver changes therefore Twigg and Emery will compete in one race each.
Each of the three races will include one compulsory pit stop with Emery and Twigg being held for a minimum of 16 seconds at each stop, plus extra time dependent on their grid starting position, and Haber being held for a minimum of 36 seconds at each stop, plus extra time dependent on his grid starting position.
Practice 1 for the Australian GT Championship presented by Pirelli begins at 10:25am on Thursday (Australian Central Daylight Time).
