When The Tide Resort’s Grand Pacific Ballroom throws its doors open for the annual Bangsaen Thailand Speed Festival Press Conference – that means only one thing, we’re heading into the final countdown to the biggest and most spectacular annual motorsport event in Thailand. Nothing comes even remotely close to the ‘Speed Festival’ in terms of interest from fans, the media or TV audiences and this year is all set to be the same story.

The Bangsaen Thailand Speed Festival doesn’t stand still either and next month’s edition will be bigger, better, brighter and even more glamorous than ever before as the new features keep on coming. On the track key sections are now being resurfaced and the hairpin is being extended while off track the ‘show’ will also move up the gears and highlights are set to include the new ‘Bangsaen Speed Club’ pavilion at Laem Taen while on Beach Road there will be two new concert stages as the extravaganza continues to expand further and further down the town’s famous beachfront.

Meanwhile, during the last round of the series in Buriram we honoured our champions of 2013, the very highest achievers, the drivers and teams that laid claim to being the ‘best of the best’ during the inaugural season of the new series. A special evening saw our iconic new trophy handed out to the very first champions of the ‘New Era’.

In Buriram there was real action in every category across the Thailand Super Series (TSS) programme and that was especially the story in three of the most popular and closely fought support categories – Super Pickup, Super 1500 and Super Production. Skilled drivers and quick cars, these are breeding grounds for the drivers and the teams of the future.

‘Speed Festival’ Press Conference sets the ball rolling

The annual Bangsaen Thailand Speed Festival Press Conference took place last Wednesday afternoon and the organisers’ were able to present full details of an event that promises to be even bigger, better and brighter than ever before. There was a large attendance for the press conference, which took place at Bangsaen’s iconic ‘The Tide Resort’ and interest in next month’s motor racing extravaganza is certainly now building up very fast.

There simply isn’t a motorsport event in Thailand that comes anywhere close to the ‘Speed Festival’; it’s the highlight of the racing year and in 2014 it’s going to be exactly the same story. In fact for Thai motorsport fans there is extra anticipation as this year two of the four TSS race weekend have taken place well outside the county’s racing ‘heartland’ and so most engaged spectators haven’t seen top level national motorsport in action since the premier series raced at Bira Circuit back in July. It’s been a long wait, but it’s going to have been well worth the wait.

Bangsaen will be much bigger and more glamorous than ever before – that was the clear message coming out of the press conference, held, as is the tradition, at Bangsaen’s signature hotel, The Tide Resort on Beach Road. The press conference took place in the plush Pacific Grand Ballroom and TSS President Sontaya Kunplome introduced the proceedings.

The ‘Speed Festival’ is a fast growing event that never stays still and for this edition there will be an extra day added into the programme, meaning the action on track will run continuously from Tuesday to Sunday, while there will be new events included, such as a cycling ‘Criterium’, and new leisure features, including the debut of the ‘Bangsaen Speed Club’ for spectators at Laem Taen as well an much expanded Activity Zone on Beach Road.

TSS Race Director Khun Preeda Tantemsapya said on the sidelines of the press conference that the new pavilion, which has been dubbed the ‘Bangsaen Speed Club’, is shaping up to be one of the most exciting additions to the Festival’s rich landscape this year as it will aim to link up the history of the event as well as provide plenty of information to present a useful educational backdrop for visitors. “The history of how Bangsaen evolved will be told and especially it will explain who are the champions and who are the drivers that fans should look out for in the races, particularly in the Super Car class,” he noted. “There will be a lot of information for people to study in a pleasant environment.”

The trackside ‘show’ will continue to grow with a two-prong strategy being enacted. As well as an increase in the recreational footprint at Laem Taen, in particular thanks to the new pavilion, the Activity Zone on Beach Road will also grow further. “We will extend on Beach Road at the end of the paddock opposite the Heritage Hotel,” revealed Khun Preeda. “Last year this new area proved popular and for next month we will also have new stages for concerts, one hosted by Singha and another by Toyota.”

Track upgrades and improvements, as well as the continual fast drive towards international standards, were also at the forefront of the Press Conference, as Khun Preeda was quick to affirm. “We have enlarged the hairpin by 1.3 metres while 1.2 kilometres of track has been resurfaced,” he said. “The FIA will send their inspectors to the event to check on the spot, they can only come during the race week as they can only see it one week a year. We are very confident that we will pass and achieve FIA Grade 4 status.” That will allow much bigger international series to join the programme – and there are exciting plans already in motion for next year.

Bringing the action forward to Tuesday will allow drivers the opportunity to enjoy greater track running time, which is always quite limited during the official programme as there are so many categories involved. And that’s just the first step; for 2015 the programme will in fact kick off a day earlier. “We will extend the programme to start on the Monday next year,” says Khun Preeda. “We will then be able to take out some of the races on the Saturday and Sunday and run them in the week and that will help to ease the pressure as the timetable is quite tight at the moment.”

There’s going to be an exciting new addition to the ‘competitive’ track programme this year, but with a twist as it will be reserved for machines with two wheels and of a strictly of the ‘pedal powered’ variety. With TSS closely focused on adopting emerging trends, a new event will be added, the ‘Bangsaen Criterium’. “We will hold a bike criterium on the Sunday morning,” explains Khun Preeda. “It will be held over 14 laps and is going to be made up of 30 teams, each with four cyclists. That means there will be one hundred and twenty riders involved.

“Teams are already enrolling and we expect many serious racers to join up,” he continued. There will be trophies for individual riders and teams with the winning team being the first one to get all four of its riders across the finishline. The Bangsaen Criterium will start at 0700 and is scheduled to last for about an hour.

Khun Preeda also noted that anticipation of ‘Speed Festival’ is growing very fast and he reckons that’s also down to race fans have been starved of motorsport this year; so the arrival of Bangsaen is gaining extra impetus. “We expect a bigger crowd this year,” he said. “We haven’t had a race in the area since July as we went to Buriram last month instead of our traditional second Bira date while our first race of the year was in Sepang. So people haven’t had much of a chance this year to see motorsport.

“The Press Conference went very well,” Khun Preeda reported – and he’s also happy with the way momentum is gathering pace as the build up enters its final few weeks. “We have also been on TV quite a few times in the last week,” he noted. “Particularly on Channel 3 where TSS was featured last Thursday and then on Friday the Ferrari of Khun Voravud [Bhirombhakdi] was featured also.” Get ready for the best ever Bangsaen Thailand Speed Festival – that was the clear message.

TSS Buriram: Super Pickup (Race Report)

Top-level truck racing in the ‘New Era’ is all about one driver and one team, the driver in question is Khun Pete Thongchua and the team is Parker-Innovation Motorsport. They don’t welcome anyone else to the party. No one. And as the sun set over Buriram on the Sunday evening after a long weekend of TSS racing action Khun Pete headed for home, literally, with his arms full of trophies and his third consecutive Super Pickup overall title signed, sealed and delivered.

After the first six races of the season Khun Pete has notched up five wins and one DNF. That sole retirement came courtesy of a brake problem that dumped the yellow #17 Mazda BT-50 out of the race lead and into the Bira gravel back in July – it wasn’t due to any of him rivals raising their game far enough to challenge him.

In Buriram at the beginning of the month there were three races scheduled for the trucks and the result was three comfortable wins for Khun Pete. This superstar driver has never shown any intention this year of relaxing his grip in the title and from pole position in the first race he sped away into the distance and then when the top of the grid was reversed in next race he picked off the trucks in front of him within a few turns.

The best of the rest was Khun Waris Onyarab; he was the only driver to make a serious appearance in Khun Pete’s rear view mirrors all weekend. The Isuzu D-Max driver dug really deep and used all his natural speed to chase the #17 Mazda during all three races, certainly he harried the yellow #17 truck over the opening laps, but in reality Khun Waris wasn’t able to put in a challenge that would stack up – although he didn’t lack in effort.

The drivers in the other Parker-Innovation Motorsport entry might have changed, as Khun Phisit Netdechathanasit has taken over the highly successful  Mazda BT-50 that Khun Michael Freeman raced for the last few seasons, but the speed of the pickup hasn’t. Khun Phisit drove the blue and yellow machine in qualifying to P2, putting himself right behind his teammate Khun Pete Thongchua. That gave the team its usual front row of the grid lockout for the first race and come the green lights the Mazda drivers’ weren’t letting anyone else muscle in at the front either.

Over the opening laps Khun Pete led from Khun Phisit who came under early pressure from Khun Waris. After a few laps Khun Phisit pulled out a 2 second cushion which he was able to maintain before steadily pulling away. Late in the race though he dropped away with a broken turbo and by the checkered flag Khun Pete had pulled out almost 19 seconds over Khun Waris who cruised home in second place. In fact Khun Pete was three quarters of a minute ahead of the third placed driver, Khun Akasit Kriengkomol, such was the blistering pace of the top two. Khun Phisit however still struggled to the line in seventh place and fourth in class despite his mechanical problems and thus picked up valuable championship points.

The top five finishers from the first race were reversed on the grid for the middle race of the weekend and that meant Khun Pete would start from the third row. At the green lights Khun Waris led the pack into Turn 1 but Khun Pete quickly powered his way straight up to the front and by Turn 3 he was in the lead.

At the end of the first lap his advantage was 0.755 seconds, although this is symptomatic of a new Pete. So used to cruising his way through the truck races he doesn’t feel the need to showboat and win by a clear minute anymore, rather he now does just enough to claim the victory and preserve the truck ready for his next adventure. Not only is he banging in the wins for his team, he’s reducing wear and tear costs to a minimum. Khun Pete and his team are really made for each other and this superstar driver grows with stature with every race. Khun Waris however hung onto Khun Pete’s tail over the opening laps as the front two left the rest of the pack standing still, but in reality Khun Pete had backed off, happy to lead by a few seconds.

From his lower end of the grid slot thanks to his mechanical issues the previous day, Khun Phisit quickly moved up the order and into P3 to give Parker Innovation Motorsport a 1-3 finish on the road; he was 18.373 seconds back at the flag. Fourth went to Khun Chumnan Onsri, which was his second straight fourth place in Buriram.

It was the same story and same script in the final race right from the start. Khun Pete led the trucks away, Khun Waris tucked in behind him and these two pulled away from the chasing pack. Although Khun Waris harried the Mazda over the first few laps, Khun Pete soon opened the gap to a comfortable distance and it was game over once again. The Isuzu driver had to settle for Class B victory yet again; the gap after 12 laps of racing – for the record – was 5.800 seconds.

In third Khun Phisit was just over 2 seconds adrift of Khun Waris at the end. Then there was a gap of more than half a minute to Khun Akasit Kriengkomol who was fourth, another consistent finish to add to his P3 in the first race and P5 in the second.

It all means that Khun Pete is crowned champion, he has 100 points thanks to five straight maximum 20 points scores, but attention now turns to the battle for the runners up spot as no less three drivers are separated by just 3 points: Khun Chumnan is on 58 points, Khun Waris is on 57 points and Khun Phisit is on 55 points. Consistent driving from Khun Chumnan in Buriram, two fourths and a fifth, allowed him to retain the runners up spot in the classification as the competitors headed home, but he has lost ground and in fact the big winner was Khun Waris, his three straight seconds means he’s now just a single point off second place.

Khun Phisit, benefitted greatly from switching from his regular truck to the black and yellow Mazda BT-50 that Khun Michael ran last year, the experienced Thai driver enjoyed a strong weekend although a seventh place in the first race after mechanical issues was costly, but he bounced back with two third places in the final two races. With the Drivers’ and Teams’ titles already in the bag Parker-Innovation Motorsport is going to fancy its chances of making it a clean sweep and get Khun Phisit into the runners up spot next month at Bangsaen.

In fact just 8 points cover second to fifth as lurking behind this trio comes Khun Nuthaporn who is now on 50 points so he can be considered a ‘dark horse’ in the fight for second spot. As ever with this more flamboyant of teams – there was a story to tell. This time it involved a last minute swap of trucks. “On Thursday I used the [Toyota] Vigo for practice but there was the same problem, again the engine [has] high temperatures,’ Khun Nuthaporn explained.

So Team Donut had hard decisions to make – and to make them fast, qualifying was coming up the next day. “In Buriram my friend [Khun Aekaluck Nakkerd] has a spare car, the green [Isuzu] D-Max [as well as the] black and pink Isuzu that are both here already one week before the race, but that other car has problem with the engine. So we sum up to let the ‘Croc’ [Vigo] stay as the spare car for this event and fix the black and pink D-Max for me to use to race and then my friend drives the green one in Class C.”

From Toyota to Isuzu, the last minute swap worked out very well as Khun Nuthaporn made it to the Class B podium in all three races, third in the first race, fifth in the second and fourth in the third; that means he remains right in the title chase. And, also significantly, it’s kept him in the hunt in upper ranking of the overall standings.

In Class B three maximum points hauls for Khun Waris in Buriram has seen him overtake Khun Phisit at the top of the standings, but the gap is just six points. Also in the Class B fight is Khun Nuthaporn as he’s just one point behind Khun Phisit and 7 points off the top. It’s also very tight in Class C, the gap between the leading two drivers is just 6 points with the advantage currently being to Khun Nipon Khtsee. But, thanks to two maximum points scores and a third place in Buriram, Khun Aekaluck has hauled himself into contention for the crown.

Last word to the new ‘champ’ – and after his clean sweep of wins in Buriram and once he had made his final trip to the podium in the gathering darkness of Sunday evening, Khun Pete was in emotional mood. “It’s what we expected and a 100% turnout, it’s just so beautiful,” said the actor-driver who loves to race as much as anyone on the grid. “I would like to thank TSS for having the Super Pickup class in the series so I’ve got a chance to prove my skills but without [Parker-Innovation Motorsport] and Michael Freeman I wouldn’t be here at this moment. I would like to give totally 1000% credit to him and to his team; the car is a humongous winning car always. There’s still two more races, they will be last races of our trucks.” Well his rivals will certainly hope so, but the team said exactly the same thing last year so it really remains to be seen.

TSS Buriram: Super 1500 (Race Report)

Khun Nuttapong Lertlumprasertkul made a winning return to Super 1500, edging out a 2 second gap over Khun Anon Rodprasert by the time the 11 lap first race of the weekend received the checkered flag. The Big Racing Car Thailand Honda driver also posted the fastest lap of the race. Khun Anon was handed a 30 second penalty post race for jumping the start and that meant the runners up spot went to Khun Sorasak Saeng-xuto who also won Class C, but it was very close, he was less than a second ahead of Khun U-tain Pongprapas. Fourth place and third in Class C went to Khun Phuwarit Makmu (Honda EK) while Khun Anon was eventually classified fifth after he received a time penalty.

After a clean sweep of wins from the first four races and with the Super 1500 title already bagged, there was a surprise first DNF of the year for Khun Weerasak Homsuwan. The distinctive green Civic completed just four laps of the race.

The second race saw Khun Anon on pole from Khun Phuwarit, thanks to the top five of the grid being reversed. Hostilities were immediately resumed over the opening laps between Khun Nuttapong and Khun Anon; with the latter eventually squeezing ahead until a late race Safety Car period shuffled the pack. Cars to end up trackside included Khun Nuttapong who thus missed out on and late chance of making it two wins out of two.

Khun Anon was able to take the victory ahead of Khun Phuwarit while Khun U-tain was third and Khun Weerasak was fourth. The new champion really had a tough weekend, with one DNF and one fourth to his name, a comedown to earth after his season opening four straight wins. Khun Vicchaiyu Meesai meanwhile wrapped up the top five. Aside from Khun Nuttapong, other big name retirements included Khun Komkrit Lertlumprasertkul and Khun Sorasak.

Also of note was Khun Tony Percy, who was eighth overall and third in Class C. He was debuting a newly built Jazz, having ditched the Vios he ran in the previous rounds of the series this year. The car was fresh out of the box and still quite raw, he however hopes to have the car sorted in time for Bangsaen.

Making his debut in Super 1500 was Mark Peter Titerington, in a Honda DC2. This driver, who previously contested the now discontinued ‘Super Retro’ category a few years back, missed the first race of the weekend with engine problems and was well down in power in the second race, as he explained afterwards. “In qualifying I lost power, the valve seat [was] gone,” he said. “The head [was] finished for Sunday but I still had no power.” However after sitting out the first race he brought the car to the line in P11 in the second and promises that the problems will be solved in time for Bangsaen.

TSS Buriram: Super Production (Race Report)

Khun Pasarit Phromsombat and Khun Kajornsak Na Songkhla came into the Buriram weekend neck-and-neck in the points standings; however it was the former who got the better of the defending champion and Khun Pasarit won both races overall, as well as in Class B, to open up a small advantage at the top as he goes forward to the finale in Bangsaen next month.

The RMI Racing by Sunoco driver made pretty easy work of it in the first race and he had opened up a massive cushion by the time the checkered flag was waved after 11 laps of action. Second place, and first in Class A, went to Khun Kajornsak, who switched away from his usual Ford Fiesta to drive the NSports team’s Honda City for this event, while third, as well as Class C victory, was the preserve of Khun Anusorn Asiralertsiri; he was just seven tenths of a second back.

Fourth went to the OMP Vattana Motorsport Jazz of Khun Piyalert Boonyakiat after he narrowly fended off the Parker-Innovation Motorsport Mazda2 of Khun Michael Freeman; the gap between the two was only seven-tenths of a second at the line. A bit further down the road came Khun Anders Majgaard in the CEA Racing City; the Dane was having his first run in Super Production in 2014 after having linked up with the category last year. Seventh, but more significantly second in Class C, went to Khun Witawin Sondthiraksa in the XO Singha Team Eakie Jazz as he continues to work hard to put the ‘junior’ title beyond everyone else’s reach.

The second race again saw victory going to Khun Pasarit, but he had to work a lot more this time, the gap was just 4.076 seconds at the end of the 9 lap race. Those two wins though have helped him turn the tables on Khun Kajornsak and he’s opened out a 7 point advantage with two races remaining. Third went to Khun Phong Trakulthong in the Lipo K45 City, he also ran out Class C winner.

Bagging his second overall podium of the weekend in fourth place was Khun Michael in the factory-supported Mazda2. That gave him 12 points to add to the 10 points he scored in the first race and that means he’s now leapfrogged Khun Thanapol Pruttipong into third in the overall standings.

Meanwhile fifth place went to Khun Witawin, his second Class C runner up spot of the weekend and a result that once again played right into his hands in regard to the championship standings. He was also very close to the Mazda driver; the gap between the two was only one second at the checkered flag.

“My car is same car [as Khun Kantadhee Kusiri drives in another series] but not with the same engine as there are different regulations,” Khun Witawin explained. “His event has very good conditions for the race car but I can still drive in 2:03 [in Buriram] and that means first position in Class C. But I have a big problem because I have a handicap weight, 1,090 kilos, but other guys are 1,050 [kilos], so that’s why I can’t overtake to the first position. On Saturday I drive carefully as I mind the championship points but it’s ok and [on Sunday] I try to go for the first position but I have a mistake at the start I try to return to first place but a spring valve in the engine breaks but I do my best in second place.”

Khun Witawin was in fact sandwiched between the brace of Parker-Innovation Motorsport Mazda2s as Khun Pete Thongchua came home in sixth place overall ahead of Khun Nattachak Hanjitkasem in the TBN MK Ihere Toyota Vios who was also second in Class B. The rest of the Class C podium were next up on the road, with Khun Paven Panboonhom eighth overall and third in Class C, Khun Anusorn, ninth overall and fourth in Class C, and Khun Andrey Snetkov, tenth overall and fifth in Class C.

It means that going into Bangsaen Khun Pasarit has opened up a 7 point advantage over Khun Kajornsak, it’s now 136 points to 129 points, but that’s far too close for comfort and the reigning champion is still very well positioned to defend his title.

Khun Michael has shown impressive consistency and increasing speed all year and that’s coupled to a very similar story for the Mazda2 that Parker-Innovation Motorsport has developed into a highly competitive racecar from a zero baseline. In fact over the last two TSS rounds, at Bira and Buriram, the Australian hasn’t been outside the top three overall points scoring positions. It means his decision to quit Super Pickup and focus this year entirely on Super Production seems to be really paying off and he’s now moved into third place in the standings with 95 points.

Khun Thanapol Pruttipong only picked up 9 points from the two races in Buriram and that means he slips to fourth place, with 86 points, while Khun Pete puts both of the factory supported Mazda2s in the top five overall as he’s next up with 77 points.

In Class B Khun Pasarit has now opened up a comfortable 23 point advantage over Khun Thanapol while in Class C Khun Witawin needs just a single point in Bangsaen to seal the title, he’s on 140 points compared to Khun Paul Kenny’s 100 points. After a win and a fourth Khun Anusorn moves into third with 90 points while Khun Andrey had a difficult weekend in the North East and slips to fourth with 78 points.

Honouring the best of the best

During the most recent round in Buriram, TSS honoured its champions of 2013, the highest achievers, the drivers and teams that laid claim to being the ‘best of the best’ during the inaugural season of the new series. The first champions of the ‘New Era’.

The ceremony and dinner, which took place in the town’s Thepnakorn Hotel, was introduced by TSS President Sontaya Kunplome and in fact many of the drivers attending had been in final qualifying action that afternoon at the brand new circuit just a few kilometres away as they now chase the top prizes in 2014.

TSS Race Director Preeda Tantemsapya noted that the event had been held a bit later than planned, but for the ‘New Era’ the organisers’ had wanted to create a striking new trophy that would both standout and reflect the history and traditions of Thai motorsport. The TSS champions’ trophy is the biggest honour in national motorsport and winning it poses a challenge tougher than any other in circuit racing.

The trophy had to reflect the landmarks of Thai racing history and provide a clear link from past to present to future. So there was really only one choice of a mirror image that would look straight back at any driver or team manager that picks up this honour – Prince Bira. His achievements on the racetrack were stunning but much more than that he was the ‘father’ of Thai motorsport, taking it from nothing and planting it on the map. Not just in Thailand, but also across South East Asia and the world, he’s highly respected, admired and honoured. No Thai driver ever takes to a Thai racetrack without Prince Bira as his or her inspiration and motivation.

Prince Bira’s ERA racing ‘voiturettes’ are utterly synonymous with the legend, everyone recognises their unique shape and knows their stories, and so the trophy design team wanted to bring a pervading sense of that myth to the trophy, to honour the very fabric of Thai motorsport. TSS also wanted a trophy, which apart from its quality and desirability, would not change in the future and become a real legacy to the ‘New Era’. The dots joined together.

“It was a long wait for the Champions Day but the reason behind it was we were developing the trophy,” said Khun Preeda. “It took a long time to develop it but we wanted a design that would reflect the ‘New Era’ and would last for ever.”

He was happy that the design had hit the right blend. “Once the day arrived and the drivers and teams saw the trophy they said it was well worth the wait, that was the feedback,” he commented. “Drivers told to me it was one of the best trophies they had ever seen.”

The ‘Champions Day 2013′ attracted many of our champions, both past and present, and while it was fitted within the weekend programme, it set the right tone. “I think it was a good night,” said Khun Preeda. “We want to be the best motorsport series and to always be a few steps ahead so the start the New Era is showing a lot of promise and we have created a trophy that will really reward the champions.”

While this year’s event took sometime to put together as we waited for the final version of the trophy, the ‘Champions Night 2014’ will be held much soon after the end of this season. “Next year we will make the Champions Day much earlier,” said Khun Preeda. “[TSS President] Khun Sontaya Kunplome has already indicated that we will have the night no later than the end of March and we are looking for a new place to have our special day with a different atmosphere.”

Khun Preeda is also happy with the new design of the individual ‘race’ winners’ trophy, which was introduced at Buriram and will carry on through next season with a new design likely in 2016. Meanwhile, the Bangsaen trophy, which was redesigned for last year’s event, will get some further revisions for the next edition which is coming up in just a few weeks time.

“The Bangsaen trophy is slightly different, we’ve improved the finish and details,” explains Khun Preeda. “The logo of Bangsaen is the same but we have upgraded it all a little bit, the lettering, and the detailing is now better.”
