The first victory this year and for you in your responsibility as Head of DTM at Audi? How’s the mood?
Obviously, the joy on such a weekend is enormous. ‘Rocky’ in particular was fully in contention and always running at the very front on both days. His victory was the icing on the cake of a really strong showing.
What was the key to success in the race at Brands Hatch?
On the short and narrow track the start was extremely important. ‘Rocky’ drove off perfectly and then managed to work out a small advantage on the option tires. That put him in a comfortable position. The strategy was right, and so were the two pit stops – and the day was perfect.
After the first two races: How happy are you with the innovations in the DTM regulations?
In my opinion, we’ve seen two thrilling races, at Hockenheim as well as at Brands Hatch. Especially here in England, due to the difficult overtaking opportunities, this hasn’t always been the case in recent years. It shows that the new ideas are paying off and that we’re on the right track. Of course, it’s possible to work on a few more details here and there. But I’d suggest that we first wait and see how the new procedures and options affect us over the course of a few races.
In two weeks from now, you’ll be traveling to the Red Bull Ring on which Audi won twice in succession. What are the expectations?
We’ve got very fond memories of Spielberg – particularly of Edoardo (Mortara) of course, who would like to continue where he left off with his victory last year. The requirements profile in Austria, though, is completely different than it last was in England. Brands Hatch is a downforce track, whereas at Spielberg aerodynamic efficiency is important. I’m optimistic that we’ll be competitive again.
