The fourth round of the International GT Open, which marks the end of the first half of the season, will bring participants to Andalusia, at Jerez de la Frontera, a ‘new entry’ track in the series’ calendar, and a track that Joel hasn’t visited for over a dozen years. The Swiss driver is ready to take up the challenge, which will be double, as the Ferrari F458 GT3 that he normally uses in the series has been heavily damaged in an accident at Bratislava last weekend by his team mate Mario Cordoni. Considering also the long journey to Southern Spain, Ombra Racing did not have enough time to repair the car and will bring to Jerez only one of its two machines. Joel will be racing at the wheel of that lone car, together with its usual driver, Stefano Costantini.
Joël Camathias: “The season is entering its busiest part, with one race after the other. I am certainly not complaining, as I am always happy to be racing! It’s nice to go back to Jerez, I can’t even remember exactly when I raced there for the last time. It must have been 1999 or 2000, with the F.Nissan, during my single-seater period. It was over ten years ago, almost a lifetime in racing, and I will have to rediscover the track from scratch, but I do remember a nice track, fast and with some interesting sections. Clearly, the week ahead of this race has been a little bit hectic, with Mario’s accident last weekend, and the impossibility to repair the car on time. I am happy that I can step into the other Ombra Racing car, although sad that Mario will have to miss this round. Still, these things happen in racing… I will be partnering with Stefano Costantini, who is an excellent driver, and I am confident we can do well, although it is clear that this year, the level in the GT Open is such, that any result has to be hard-sweat for!”
